Architects Susana Fiuza and Mariana Mota give tips on what will be trends in architecture and interior decoration in 2021

After 2020 practically at home, many people realized how pleasurable it can be to enjoy their little corner. In many, it also aroused the desire to make the house even more like the residents or the need to fix a little thing here and there. With 2021 approaching, plans to revamp the environments should already be on the list of goals. Therefore, we bring here the main trends in architecture and decoration for 2021, led by architects Susana Fiuza, presenter of the program Oba, Obra!, on TV Otimista, and Mariana Mota, director of Cerbras.
CORES
Each year, Pantone – from the Pantone Color Institute – chooses the color of the year, which influences product development, whether in decoration, fashion or design. For 2021, she chose two colors: Illuminating (yellow) and Ultimate Gray (gray). While yellow represents strength and positivity, gray refers to solid and reliable elements, which offer a firm foundation. According to Pantone, the pair of independent colors shows that very different elements can come together to support each other.
Architect Susana Fiúza, however, remembers that, as with other architectural elements, the use of colors will depend on the client's profile. "It's much more about what the customer wants and how their way of living, using, being in the environment is. In a commercial environment, it's what they need to convey, what they need to convey to attract customers or to have a wonderful experience in the space", he explains.
FLOORS AND COATINGS
The pandemic has shown the importance of prioritizing the use of materials that offer practical cleaning. "Covers such as ceramics and porcelain tiles stand out due to their ease of cleaning. Paying attention to disinfecting the coverings used in property projects is now, in addition to practicality, also a health issue", says architect Mariana Mota. According to her, larger sized porcelain tiles tend to gain more space in the market, helping to create the impression of spaciousness in the environments.
Coatings that combine durability, resistance and naturalness are Susana Fiúza's bets for 2021. She says that she has used quartzite a lot in her projects, a natural stone typically from Brazil and also produced in the interior of Ceará. "It's a completely natural, resistant, hard material. A tendency is for us to increasingly use our materials, our country's fabrications to make money flow here, but often, we take the best and export them", observes the professional.
FURNITURE
The trend is for furniture to keep up with the mutability of today's life. "I have designed in a looser, more flexible way so that the client, when they move, can take the furniture. My tendency has been designer furniture, which has much more finishing and will last. We are going to invest more in art, in design, especially Brazilian ones", highlights the TV presenter Otimista.
ENVIRONMENT INTEGRATION
Uniting spaces to gain space in environments and connect people continues to be a trend in 2021. "We work from home, our leisure time is at home, bringing people inside. So, this means that we use environments in an increasingly integrated way. Depending on the client, the style and the life of that family, we often integrate the environment by placing a sliding door that, when you want, closes", teaches Susana.
